There are three types of "dead" amongst the blood; he Guardians, the demon-dead, and the Harpies. You can become a Guardian after being demon-dead, and Guardians can eventually fade back into being demon-dead. As their lifespans have already expired, there's no real lifespan on the three types of dead- unless the Darkness comes calling.
The Guardians
The Guardians are thought of as the "living-dead". The Guardians are a people who have passed onto another life, not living, but not quite dead. They are capable of enjoying food, the pleasures of the flesh, and being in the sun for small amounts of time as long as they drink flesh blood and protect themselves from the sun as much as possible. To become a Guardian, you usually must be darker Jeweled in life and have a strong will-of-mind.
The Demon-Dead
Weaker than the Guardians are the demon-dead. The demon-dead drink a concoction of blood- oftentimes lamb blood- mixed with wine in order to keep their bodies going. However, sunlight weakens them greatly and they are not able to eat food or enjoy pleasures of the flesh as a Guardian might. It's important to recognize that Guardians can become demon-dead, and the demon-dead can become Guardians if they drink enough fresh blood and allow their bodies to restore themselves. These two races are a result of strong psychic power leftover from the Blood's Jewels, leaving their minds intact. The demon-dead carry the wounds they received when they died. The demon-dead aren't classified by the Jewel, and aren't specified to full-Blood. A half-Blood can become demon-dead. However, the lighter the Jewel, the less time you have as demon-dead, and you aren't likely to become a Guardian with a lighter Jewel.
The Harpies
Harpies are female witches who died violent deaths. Any violently-killed witch can become a Harpy, though long ago, it was primarily Dea al Mon witches who joined the Harpy forces, as Titian, a Dea al Mon witch, was the Harpy Queen. The Harpy Queen may or may not control hellhounds; Titian controlled them and fondly called them her pets.
